Two Chicago Bands Get More Than Kicks on Route 66

Red Bull Rock The Route Gives Young Jesus and Brighton MA a Chance to Shine

Two local Chicago bands were given the chance of a lifetime — to tour along the infamous Route 66 starting in Chicago at Kinetic Playground and ending in a final show at the Viper Room in Los Angeles. More than just a tour, challenges and unique obstacles were thrown their way during the entire trip determining who would win the ultimate experience of recording in the Red Bull studio in Santa Monica. Who won? You’ll have to tune in to find out. The entire journey was documented by the bands, including the ups and the downs of the tour. The first two episodes began airing yesterday at

Bands Brighton MA and Young Jesus both took a big step outside their routine gigs after auditioning to journey together across the Main Street of America. While facing off in several challenges on and off stage in one week-long adventure, no two bands have ever experienced a tour like this one before. The band members can speak for themselves, but a hint of it includes taking turns riding in a debilitated van and a decked-out, once a 1955 Greyhound bus, “Red Bull Scenicruiser.” They pulled over halfway on Route 66 in Amarillo, TX for the 72 oz steak challenge, just one of many challenges given to them.

Each band also had the opportunity to receive feedback after three of their shows along the way. In just a single week, they got criticism and applause from the Plain White Ts while kicking off the tour in Chicago, members of Shiny Toy Guns after playing a Halloween show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and finally some great advice in Los Angeles by Ohio-native, Gilby Clarke, producer and former lead guitar player for Guns & Roses.

Almost one month back from the tour, the bands still have nostalgia and their growing fan base is buzzing about both bands. They are no longer just local bands and are likely to become national names very soon.
