KHS Becomes Leader in Industry with TFT Membership

Music Instrument Company Sets Standard in Industry for Responsible Wood Sourcing

Musical Instrument manufacturer and distributor KHS Musical Instrument Co, Ltd. announces its entry as the newest member to The Forest Trust (TFT). A non-profit organization registered in the United Kingdom, TFT has been using innovative techniques for the conservation of forests for over ten years. The organization helps its members achieve certification through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) by creating responsible supply chains and product lines by using wood from sustainable forests.

This partnership marks an important first foray into the music industry for TFT. Its partnership with KHS sets a new standard amongst its peers for obtaining legally sustainable wood for its standard, intermediate and professional instruments that require this precious resource.

“Specially selected tonewoods produce the specific voice musicians demand,” says Jon Lee, Chief Designer for Walden Guitars, a KHS brand. “Whether it is for a drum, a guitar or a wind instrument such as a clarinet, these woods offer the beautiful tone that is expected in today’s quality musical instruments. Responsible, ethical sourcing ensures that music-wood will be available for the foreseeable future.”

Membership for KHS begins with evaluating the existing supply chain, including all wood suppliers, and working closely with TFT to help install controls for monitoring all incoming wood sources. This will evolve into a full length “chain of custody” certification from FSC showing that KHS can trace all woods used in manufacturing retroactively through their supply chains to sustainable forests.

As a leading worldwide manufacturer of musical instruments, KHS is committed to its social and environmental responsibilities and welcomes other manufacturers to make the investment necessary to protect and enhance our natural resources.

“Our goal is to ensure all wood used in our instruments originate from legally verified forest operations,” said Tabor Stamper, President of KHS America, the U.S. division of the company. “Our enrollment into The Forest Trust membership is an important step in providing quality, forest-friendly musical instruments.”

Membership in The Forest Trust extends to all of KHS operations including those in Asia, Japan, Europe and the U.S.
